The stories of Atal Behari Vajpayee (India’s tenth Prime Minister) and Narendra Modi (India’s fifteenth Prime Minister) illustrate what I mean by making the best of a bad situation:
In 1996, Vajpayee became Prime Minister but his government lasted only thirteen days. He became PM once again in 1998 but his government only lasted thirteen months. Many people jumped to the conclusion that the number thirteen had proved unlucky for Vajpayee. The truth was far from it. The two short stints in government made Vajpayee realize the importance of building a sound coalition of allies. He became PM once again in 1999 and served a full term precisely because of the skills he acquired in managing allies.
Narendra Modi was ridiculed as a chaiwala—a mere tea-seller—by some of his political opponents. Modi used the barb to his fullest advantage. He effectively marketed his own humble origins as contrasted with the privileged upbringing of his rivals. During the election campaign his managers organized meetings at tea stalls and called them Chai Pe Charcha (discussions over tea). During these sessions, Modi would interact with his audiences via video conferencing. A single barb was turned into a deadly weapon by Narendra Modi thus resulting in his becoming the fifteenth Prime Minister of India.
